Information for event organisers

If you’ve arrived at this page looking for theories and strategies to deal with misbehaving school children, then this probably isn’t the training session for you. Organisations such as Pivotal Education might server you better for those issues. However, if you are a Further Education & Skills provider and want to better understand, and own, the causes of adverse behaviour then this might just be the session you’re after.

We’ll look at the issues caused by a lack of understanding of how groups form, which go on to result in behavioural challenges, and we’ll also look at how to be proactive in avoiding them. We’ll cherry-pick the elements of Transactional Analysis to explore what can inflame, and how to diffuse, a challenging situation. And we’ll also look at one of the most common causes of the passivity and disengagement that can lead to challenging behaviour: dealing with over-contributors.

As the session progresses, it zooms in from curriculum design to specific element of pedagogy that together produce a learning culture where we can champion the development of all our learners, regardless of their starting points. We’ll look at The Attention War, Transition Management, and the use of Active-Listening Strategies. We’ll also look at the very wonderful Taxonomy Teams strategy for randomising seating patterns to build multi-faceted social relationships throughout your group. Imagine that, a seating-management strategy that learners actually like, resulting in no cliques and no loners.

There’s a great deal to fit into this session, but it’s all done using the very latest Tools for Online Engagement, so modelling much of the practice under discussion.

This session will enable staff to:

• evaluate a range of behaviour-support strategies and commit to further research if needed
• use their understanding of behaviour-support strategies to evaluate their current pedagogy
• manage their learning environment effectively to maintain high levels of engagement and learning momentum such that they avoid behaviour issues.
